The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) announced on Tuesday that it has dismantled a pan-India drugs trafficking network operating through the dark web, resulting in what they deem as the "largest ever" seizure of LSD. LSD, known as lysergic acid diethylamide, is a synthetic chemical-based hallucinogenic drug.
The dark web refers to a hidden section of the internet where illegal activities such as drug sales, exchange of pornographic content, and other illicit transactions take place. It utilizes the anonymity provided by the onion router (ToR) to evade surveillance by law enforcement agencies.
The NCB, in a significant operation, confiscated drugs worth thousands of crores, marking it as the biggest drug seizure in the history of the anti-drug agency. The crackdown on a nationwide darknet-based drug syndicate led to the recovery of substantial quantities of the party drug LSD, and multiple smugglers associated with the network were apprehended.
To provide further insights into the drug seizure, the NCB has scheduled a press conference today at 12 pm, during which more details will be revealed.
Notably, last month, the NCB collaborated with the Indian Navy in a special operation, resulting in the recovery of 2,525 kg of methamphetamine valued at Rs 25,000 crores. The operation, conducted along the coast of Kerala, marked the "largest drug seizure in value" for the agency, according to Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Ops).
Singh stated, "NCB & Navy conducted a successful operation in the Indian Ocean. It is the largest in terms of its monetary value. It originated from the Chabahar port in Iran. The source of the drugs is Pakistan." The joint operation, named Operation Samudragupta, was initiated in February 2022 and has resulted in the seizure of over 4,000 kg of drugs thus far.
The NCB's recent accomplishments in dismantling the dark web drug trafficking network and the substantial seizure of LSD highlight the agency's commitment to combating narcotics-related crimes and ensuring the safety and well-being of society. The revelations from the press conference are eagerly anticipated, as they will shed further light on the scale and ramifications of this illicit drug network. The collaborative efforts between the NCB and the Indian Navy in Operation Samudragupta demonstrate the effectiveness of joint operations in curbing the flow of illegal substances and disrupting the drug supply chain.
These developments underscore the need for continued vigilance and concerted efforts to combat the menace of drug trafficking and its associated social and health implications. The NCB's unwavering determination to tackle drug-related crimes serves as a reminder that authorities are committed to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the welfare of the nation.
